Paddock gets axed
Four hours later...
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray today announced that John Paddock has been relieved of his head coaching duties. Murray, who will return behind the bench as head coach, will continue to perform his duties as Senators general manager. Assistant coach Ron Low has also been relieved of his coaching duties.The writing wasn't just on the wall — it was everywhere. Paddock really doesn't have a ton of NHL head coaching experience and was promoted based on his minor-league success, but with so much pressure on one of the league's top clubs, simply hasn't been able to get Ottawa to perform up to some pretty lofty standards after a terrific start.
Assistant coach Greg Carvel, goaltending coach Eli Wilson, conditioning and player development coach Randy Lee and video coach Tim Pattyson remain on the staff.
It's not likely he'll ever get another head-coaching gig after the mess that's gone on the past few months.

That has the be a bit of a surprise, no?
One wonders if Murray's head isn't the next to roll if Emery and Gerber don't shape up. If Paddock could have stopped pucks, his problems would have been solved.
How about Pat Quinn as an interim coach in Ottawa? I'm serious - Quinn knows how to motivate, and is used to a room full of veterans and star players. Give Quinn the keys, and if he does well give him a contract for next year also.
You hit the hammer on the head Dennis. I don't see it happening though.
Now that he doesn't need to worry about trades, Murray comes in and implements the same systems that got the Sens to the Finals last year. Its not like he has been away from the game for years and doesn't know the personnel.

Huh? What mess? You mean the 4th best record in the NHL? I'll take some of that mess, please.
I don't think anyone outside of Ontario is looking at that team and thinking, "what a gong show."
Andy, I wrote this yesterday, but since Jan. 1, Ottawa has a worse record than Toronto, Los Angeles and Tampa Bay.
And they lost again last night.
Ah, missed that. Still, I doubt he's ruined any future chances at a job in the show. It's a forgiving fraternity.
And it is the coach who stops pucks and turns the puck over? A team full of veterans that just went to the Stanley Cup finals the year before shouldn't need any motivation or anything from a coach except strategy. Players should motivate each other, it is not Paddock's fault. This is just the next hip thing to do, fire your coach mid season to motivate or late in the season to scare the hell out of your players.
If that makes your players play better, then you need to appoint a new captain or get a real leader in the locker room. Fear only gets you so far. Good luck getting back to the finals this year.

His previous NHL coaching stint ended 13 years ago with a losing record and without winning a playoff round. He lasted little more than 60 games this time, and he's 53 years old.
He just watched one of the best teams in the league implode under his leadership; who on earth is handing him the reins now?
1) We agree with Penaltyshots assessment. We wrote as much yesterday here as well that Paddock didn't seem like such a bad coach when Gerber was looking like Georges Vezina
2) Now that the goaltending mess(created by the new coach-old GM) is causing/worsening the Sens problems suddenly its all Paddocks fault. Its amazing how goaltending can make a coach look brilliant one day and like a dunce the next!
3) We're not saying that Paddock was a great or bad coach, but the underlying problems with the Senators are unchanged despite this move
Georges Vezina died really young.
Maybe Paddock gave the goalies TB?

The goaltending mess today is what did Paddock in. But Paddock is not blameless in the mess. Emery was hurt all last year and carried the team to the finals. He missed training camp not because of lazyness, but because he was still recovering from surgery. And when he got back, Paddock was playing Gerber every game (Gerber was playing insane, but its like game 7 of the regular season).
This led to many of the "problems" with Emery, and until very recently, Emery never got a serious run in nets (which I think after last year he deserved).
As for Eli Wilson, he also worlked with Jeff Glass's before getting hired by Ottawa (one of Ottawa's goalies in the AHL), and both those guys down there are playing great. He also helps Tim Thomas in the offseason. He does work with Emery, but he is a good coach. Al
I don't really see how firing the coach scares the hell out of the players. Especially after the trade deadline.
