A thought on European captains
Here's a thought: If the Detroit Red Wings can somehow beat Anaheim the next two games and get to the Stanley Cup finals, a European captain will lead his team to an NHL championship for the first time ever.
I guess the only question is, will it be Daniel Alfredsson or Nicklas Lidstrom who accomplishes the feat?

I'll bet there will still be people saying that, with one exception, you still need a North American captain to really understand what it takes to lead a team to the Cup.
Don't confuse people with the facts if their prejudices are already set in stone.
Maybe, since neither of those teams have a north american as a captain, they'll somehow both lose the series.
"European captain" sounds a hell of a lot like "Black quarterback". It's ridiculous that this needs to be discussed -- hopefully Daniel Alfredsson, like Doug Williams, puts an end to it soon.
And only one American captain has done it, too.
Gasp.
It already happened almost 70 years ago. Johnny Gotteslig, born in Russia, captained the Chicago Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup in 1938.
So, whoever if a "Euro" wins it this year, they'll be the second captain born in Europe, but I guess the first who played their early years in Europe. That's a mouthful to put in the record books. :D

I agree, my gut response to I guess the only question is, will it be... was "What about this question - what does it matter?"
It doesn't matter, but expect it to be a note of growing media interest once the finals get going. I just wanted to be the first to point it out :)
It's a little early to be celebrating with a plate of Freedom Fries, girls. The Ducks are not only captained by a Canadian they only have three Euros on their entire roster.
And without one of those "Euros", the Ducks wouldn't have a 3-2 lead over Detroit, either.
Ahh, nice pointing it out, but you aren't the first.
Some shrewd Hawk fans figured it out before you, back in April.
